“We’re heading out now, be good now, and listen to everything you cousin [Name] tells you okay?” your aunt said as she stooped down and gave your little 9 year old cousin, Ashlyn, a bear hug. It was Easter and they had been invited to an all adults Easter party and needed a babysitter ASAP. You lived nearby, so they gave you a ring and you drove over.

“Yes Mama. I will!” she said and ran back over to you to grab your hand. You waved bye to your Aunt and Uncle as they left. You watched as they piled into their car and drove away. Once they were out of site, you turned to Ashlyn.

“So, guess what we’re going to do now?” you asked her. She gave you a huge smile and started jumping up and down in excitement.

“Easter hunt! Easter hunt! Easter hunt!” she exclaimed. You smiled down at her and nodded.

“That’s right. Go grab your basket and we’ll start right away.” you said. She nodded and started going up the stairs to her room, but part way up, she turned to you.

“Oh yeah! I can show you my new friend, the Easter bunny!” she said, “I’ve been telling him all about you, he really want’s to meet you!” She said, then continued going up the stairs.

You stood there, a little shocked. Quite an imagination she has. you thought to yourself. You wanted to believe he was real, along with the rest of the mythical characters parents tell their children, but you thought it a bit silly that a young adult like yourself should still believe.

Ashlyn came bounding down the stairs with her basket, ready to go.

“Alright. Let’s go!” you exclaimed and opened the door to the backyard where all the eggs were hidden. “Don’t wander too far now! Stay where I can see you!” you called after her as she dashed off in search for the multi-colored eggs. You giggled as you watched her slip and slide on the muddy ground, but still keeping her balance somehow. There was one time when you were sure she was about to get a mouth full of mud and worms, but it was almost as if someone had caught her and lifted her back up.

The Easter Bunny? you questioned yourself. Maybe he was real. You were pulled from your thoughts when you heard Ashlyn call your name.

“[Name]! I want you to meet the Easter Bunny!” she called and started to run over to you. She looked like she was holding onto someones hand and dragging them with her. You squinted, and for a moment, you saw a flash of gray, and green that didn’t come from the forest behind her.

Ashlyn stopped in front of you and you beckoned her over.

“I’m having a terrible time seeing him sweetie, could you tell me what he looks like?” you asked her. She nodded and cupped her mouth to your ear and started whispering into it.

“He’s really tall, with a bunch of gray and white fur, big green eyes, with big ears on the top of his head~” she continued to describe him to you, and you just stared forward. Slowly, you started to see him. Before you knew it, there was a six foot tall bunny standing in front of you, looking at you curiously.

“What’re you telling her that’s so secretive, you little ankle bitta?” he asked your cousin, who just giggled. You stood up straight, amazed at what you saw. He seemed to remember you were there and looked at you.

“So she wasn’t kidding.” you said under your breath, but he still heard you.

“Wait . . . you can see me?” he asked you, looking a bit shocked. You just smiled a little and nodded. His beautiful green eyes lit up. “Cricky! How old are you?!” he asked.

“17.” you told him. His mind seemed thoroughly blown.

“But you’re so old.” he said. You gave him an ‘Are-you-serious?” look. Realized what he said and started stuttering.

“S-sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.” he said, a blush showing through his furry cheeks. You just shook your head and smiled.

“It’s alright. Though I’m surprised I’m taking this better than you are.” you said. You then turned to Ashlyn, who was looking up at you. “Did you find all the easter eggs?” you asked her. She thought about it for a moment, then shook her head ‘no’. “Well go find them!” you encouraged her.

“Yeah!” she shouted, then dashed off again. You and Aster giggled as you watched her run off. You turned back to him and held out your hand.

“I’m [Name], by the way. Ashlyn’s cousin.” you said. He took your hand and shook it.

“E Aster Bunnymund. At your service.” he said. You smiled up at him, rather enjoying his company. You withdrew your hand, missing the softness of his paw. He thought about something for a moment, then an excited look crossed his face.

“Close your eyes, I think I have something for you.” he said in his thick australian accent. You gave him a skeptical look before doing as he said. “Now hold out your hands.” he said. You did so and waited for a moment before he placed something small and smooth in you palms. “Okay, now open.” he said.

You did and gazed down at your hands. Inside them, was the most beautiful easter egg you had ever seen. It was different shades of (f/c) with golden dust like powder dusted on the outside, with (2f/c) swirls all around. You looked at him, amazed.

“This is beautiful.” you said. He gave you a smile and whispered something under his breath. “What did you say?” you asked. He looked at you, that blush from before coming back.

“I said, ‘Not as beautiful as you.’”
